What came first: the reality show or the psychosis?

I have an embarrassing obsession with the Real Housewives shows. I have watched every episode of every season of every city. I. Love. This. Show. But I’m afraid something is starting to spoil it for me: bizarre paranoia (and two extremely annoying and crazy women named Danielle and Kelly).

Both crazy ladies have convinced themselves that their castmates are trying to kill them. Not that castmates hate them or have it out for them: They actually claim their lives are in danger. Danielle travels with bodyguards and ex-cons for “protection,” and Kelly talks gibberish about death threats, vampires and satchels of gold.

Obviously reality shows cast a certain type — a special type of crazy that will shock, awe and entertain the masses. But there’s a difference between fun-crazy or even irritating-crazy and should-be-institutionalized crazy. That kind of crazy — the straight-jacket kind — probably shouldn’t be exploited on television.

But when did it start? Were Kelly and Danielle always insane? Or did the stress of being on a reality television show crack the nuts?

Interesting question you've posed. I think that the ladies were crazy from the start, but being on the show has simply exacerbated the crazy. Also, they both probably feared they weren't getting enough screen time and amped it up. While Danielle is certainly the more paranoid of the two, Kelly is the more idiotic and ridiculous. My favorite is that she is proud of her contradictions (won't eat processed food but loves jelly beans and gummy bears, etc.), which she defines as "unpredictable." Oh Kelly, I think the word you're really looking for is stupid. I hope she's also learned that no one fights with Andy Cohen!

OMG I'm obsessed with The Real Housewives as well but have found that just watching Danielle and Kelly - it angers and annoys me because they are so freaking stupid and their drama queen antics just make me want to B!tch slap them repeatedly. They annoy me so bad I was contemplating just not watching the shows anymore...but who am I kidding. I'm addicted, I can't cut myself off cold turkey like that! But maybe that's just me. lol Good blog.

I mean, I know editing can make a perfectly normal person look like a sociopath, but I like to think some of these people come by it naturally.

I've never watched it...but I am a Big Brother addict and I was a Real World addict back in the early 90s, in the first season. There's an art to casting...and anyone who watched the first HORRIBLE season of the US version of Big Brother saw it in action. After that season tanked, the producers supposedly hired the same people who had cast Real World for so many years to pick the right combination of people. You can see the genius behind it when you see the combinations they put together... It's really quite brilliant!

I don't know how you watch these crazy women.... Who is the seemingly normal woman who's trying to talk sense to crazy Kelly? And what the hell made her start talking about Al Sharpton??? Was it the Jack Nicholson quote? What a wacko...
